Although we are both working parents, I carry what many refer to as the “mental load” in our home — meaning the unending list of invisible tasks needed to keep a home running (somewhat) smoothly. And as there is such a massive lack of resources available to dads, I even attempted to create my own resource by launching a podcast called DILF in search of other dads I’d like to… you guessed it, FRIEND. To my surprise, the pod took off and recently hit #6 on Apple’s US Parenting Podcast charts. And yet, three years later, very little in parenting culture seems to have changed.

Last week I went onto Instagram and saw the following re-post on PARENTS instagram:

Now, I believe I have a healthy sense of humor, and I know this was merely created to get some laughs/likes. Unfortunately, it simultaneously perpetuates the stereotype that all dads are buffoons. It promotes an outdated trope that undermines the confidence of fathers everywhere, while hurting the core of family dynamics globally… and Parents Magazine (one of the most well-known sources on parenting) RE-POSTED it!?

In today’s day and age, many dads are very present in the home. This is honestly a confusing time for men — many of whom are eager to shed the armor they’ve worn most their lives, but are conflicted by how guarded society has trained them to be since birth. The issues surrounding masculinity are obviously complex — it reminds me of a story in Andrew Reiner’s eye-opening Better Boys, Better Men where two middle school boys being interviewed attempt to find the courage to explore their masculine identities within this modern world, while being called “girlie” by their female classmates. This odd juxtaposition is something men have to deal with on a daily basis: “express your feelings,” but if they make someone else uncomfortable… “man up and grow a pair.” True, this is a world full of contradictions, and absolutely no one is saying that there is an excuse for not carrying your share of the weight on the homefront; however, the solution to this very pressing issue affecting families all over the world involves both dads and moms. There is no question that moms deserve all the respect and adoration in the world, but that does not mean that dads are incapable of carrying their share of responsibility… if given the room to do so. You see, it’s as much on moms (and publications like PARENTS) to empower and allow the space for dads to enter into the conversation. In the end, the more dads are included within the conversation (rather than being the butt of the joke), the more support they can provide to the family unit. And the truth is, most dads are already present and working to carry their share… so, maybe it’s simply time for the parenting world to catch up and acknowledge it.

We’ve all seen the studies, and it’s no surprise: Moms all over the world feel over-burdened and have for quite some time. However, there’s a huge piece missing from all the research done: how are Dads are feeling within the family unit? The answer might not only surprise you, but also help moms to solve this global issue.

You see, it’s that time of year again. That time when the parenting world focuses their attention on Fathers (for about a week). And yes, this Hallmark holiday is supposed to honor those who have taken on one of the most valuable roles this world has to offer. And true, some squander it. Many in past generations didn’t realize how lucky they were, but it’s a new day… and the truth is that for the remaining part of the year, most dads feel ignored. So, even with this Father’s Day now behind us, let’s remember that there is still one gift that can be given to dads year round… and it’s simple, affordable and most-likely far overdue – ACKNOWLEDGMENT. And, the more dads are acknowledged, the bigger the opportunity for them to be included in the conversation and given the space to truly engage, which will only help to alleviate any of the burdens moms often feel – allowing for more balance and support within our homes.

Check out a short video I recently posted on Instagram on this topic:

The fact is that DADS are not buffoons, always running from responsibility. We are not all watching the game while “yes honeying.” We’re not all robots living the mantra: “happy wife, happy life” without any thoughts or feelings of our own… and yes, we may not always do our best at expressing them, and that’s on us. But look around… at your local park or school. Dads are present. Dads are part of the equation. And that does NOT minimize moms, who deserve all the accolades you can add up…. BUT don’t forget that dads are there too. And we don’t just want a seat at the table… we’re already here … and we deserve to be acknowledged by parenting culture as well with more than just a self-deprecating meme or a bbq gift set.

Let this post be a reminder that PARENTS come in all shapes, colors, and genders. Let us remember that the most important aspect to taking on this highly undervalued but unbelievably fulfilling title of parent is not biology, but the choice made to be actively involved. And every single human who makes that choice deserves appreciation every day of the year, and that includes both moms… and dads.

So let’s drop this outdated myth of dads being completely uninterested in being involved in the family unit… and let’s start by not wasting this opportunity for acknowledgement.

In short, GO HUG A DAD… and be careful to not let go too quickly.

As a podcast created to learn more about the world of #parenting & one that often asks others to delve deep into their relationship with their kids and their partners, it’s only fair that our host does the same for time-to-time… which is one of the motivations behind DILF’s Co-Parenting Series where Kevin invites on his beautiful wife Laura to discuss any issues they might be dealing with in their #coparenting relationship – whether it has to do with their child or their relationship with one another.

Luckily it’s become a popular series amongst our listeners and has seemed to be helpful tool for others in their own relationships. So, if you are new to the podcast or this co-parenting series (which is basically our version of #couplestherapy), buckle in as Kevin welcomes back his wife/co-parent for an honest + vulnerable conversation on the importance of healthy boundaries… and his wife’s self-confessed lack of any!

This is the third installment of DILF’s Co-Parenting Series…

Let’s just call it out – finding ways to CONNECT with another human being is not always easy, but sustaining a true connection with your partner once the weight and responsibilities of children have entered the picture can be especially difficult.

In this episode, Kevin once again welcomes his wife, Laura Seldon to discuss strategies on how to stay connected post-kids, while exploring the following controversial theory:

What if we were to think of this pandemic as less of a catastrophe that created major problems in the world, and more of a beacon that shined a bright spotlight on already existing problems throughout the globe, and for many of us… in our own homes. If we can find ways to be our best selves and work to form true connections with our partners during all this chaos, then we can survive anything — it’s atleast worth exploring…

In the first episode of DILF’s Co-Parenting Series, we delve into some familiar territory for most parents…

A few weeks back, my wife and I were in the middle of an argument when I realized that WHAT we were actually fighting about had nothing to do with the situation before us or the words coming out of our mouths. We were each angry about other unresolved issues in our relationship and simply using this random argument to vent frustrations without actually addressing the true issue at hand… and it was beginning to impact the environment in which we raise our child.

We were in a vicious cycle… and it wasn’t about a lack of love, it was remnants from past feelings that had yet to be resolved and simply lingered silently, growing momentum within us in a way that could slowly poison any relationship but especially dangerous for the often strained relationship between co-parents… and this made me think of a topic I’ve been working on a lot lately: A simple concept to some, yet revolutionary to others: ACKNOWLEDGMENT… one of the best ways I have found to gain resolution and put the past behind us.
